What is the selection process for the SSC CHSL exam? Are the marks scored in tier 2 used to prepare the merit list?

Before opting for any competitive exam, it’s important for any candidate to understand the entire procedure properly. Without knowing the nitty-gritty of the examination procedure it’s difficult to understand the road map. This article will help in understanding the selection procedure for the SSC CHSL exam as defined by the authority i.e. Staff Selection Commission.  

To be precise, there are three stages of the exam: the first one is an objective test followed by a descriptive test and a skill test. Now, let us understand the three stages of the examination:

SSC CHSL Tier-1 Stage

This is the initial selection process of the examination. In this stage, there are four segments that one needs to be ready about. The first one is the General Intelligence segment which consists of 25 questions containing a total of 50 marks. Next, you will have the section that will test your English Language skills with 25 questions containing 50 marks. After that, there is a segment covering questions related to Quantitative Aptitude; this will also have 25 questions containing a total of 50 marks. Last but not the least; you will have to face the General Awareness / General Knowledge section which will test your overall knowledge about what’s happening around you and the idea about usual things related to our regular subjects that we must have studied during our school day. This segment will also have 50 marks divided through 25 questions. This is the inception stage of selection; hence, you must be careful dealing with it with proper time management.

SSC CHSL Tier-2 Stage

This is the next stage of the selection procedure. This section is about writing skills. In this section, you might have to write an essay containing 200-250 words or an application or letter comprising 150-200 words. You can take this in two languages i.e. English and Hindi. This exam needs to be taken in pen-paper mode. It will carry a total of 100 crucial marks and the total time limit will be 60 minutes. 

One must understand that this is a very crucial stage as far as the final SSC CHSL merit list preparation is considered. The qualifying percentage for this exam is 33. In order to clear this stage of the selection procedure what you need a clear flow of thought and relevant information in regards to the topic or subject of the writing assignment. 

SSC CHSL Tier-3 Stage

This last stage of the selection process is a test that would check your skillset to be precise. In this segment, your typing speed will be evaluated for further proceedings. One must understand only the people with the qualifying marks in the tier-1 and tier-2 exams will be called for this examination. Now, there could be two different categories; the people appearing for (LDC/ JSA & PA/ SA), will have to go through a typing test. You will be given a paragraph that you need to type within the given time frame. If you are opting to take in Hindi, you need to have the speed of typing 30 words per minute. However, if you are taking English, a typing speed of 35 words per minute would be required.

Apart from that, if you are applying for DEO posts, a sheet containing 2000-2200 strokes would be given, you need to showcase 8000 depression per hour in order to clear the test. People having the minimum speed required will qualify for the final merit list.

The above-mentioned stages are crucial in order to understand the selection procedure of the SSC CHSL exam. With a clear understanding of all these, it will be easy for you to plan and strategize accordingly.
